“My feeling is that kids learn technique best in the service of their own creativity. Kids integrate technique into their own dances. It’s motivating” —Lydia Johnson, quoted in South Orange Patch

The LJD Dance Camp allows young dance lovers of every level to explore dance in depth with professional dancers from New York. We offer a creative, fine arts approach as an alternative to commercial studio dance education. Each year children at this esteemed creative camp find their own niche and blossom with confidence as they learn to experience the art of making their own dances! The program is full of warmth, fun and exciting activities and includes pizza Thursdays, dance games, snacks on the patio, special events and sharing of the student’s work each week on Fridays from 12:00-1:00pm.

Camp Weeks are 9am-1pm on the following dates at the Burgdorff Center in Maplewood, NJ:

Campers may sign up for 1, 2 or 3 weeks of Camp — each week concludes with a showing of student choreography.

Under the direction of choreographer Lydia Johnson, LJD company members and Teaching Artists will lead campers through a varied day of creative dance including full camp warmup, dance technique (ballet and modern) and choreography. Guest artists often teach jazz and hip-hop. The day’s focus is the Choreography Workshop in which the campers create, discuss and edit their own dances to show friends and families each week.

An extended day is offered in partnership with Geralyn’s Art Studio so campers can dance in the morning and create visual art work in the afternoons for a full day of the arts.

Teen Internships: Younger teens attend camp while assisting with younger dancers. Older teens are Camp Assistants and paid a stipend. Please email about these programs.

New this year: an additional extended day option — Lydia may offer a concentrated workshop in advanced choreography for students entering grade four and up. This extended day would be offered from 1:00-2:00pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students will present their advanced choreography projects in the final showing each Friday. If you are interested in this, please email Lydia so we can plan and coordinate a group of older dancers and get back to everyone with pricing and dates.
